Pleural Drains in Adults

Patient education post removal

  • Advise the patient and their carer regarding follow up arrangements for the removal of sutures/and dressings as required
  • Advise patient and their carer regarding activities that should be avoided following pleural drain drainage - strenuous exercise, carrying heavy objects (>5kg for adults) and lifting objects above head height
  • Advise patient and carer that air travel is not permitted until they have medical clearance from a designated specialist
  • Advise the patient/and their carer to report any new or increasing symptoms to a health professional:
    • breathlessness
    • pain on inspiration
    • pain at insertion site
    • discharge from drain insertion site
    • fevers.
