Pleural Drains in Adults

Indications and operators

Indications for removal

  • Cessation of bubbling and oscillation (pneumothorax)
  • Minimal amount of drainage (effusion/empyema)
  • Re expansion of lung has been confirmed by CXR

Skilled operators

Removal of pleural drain may be undertaken by RN and MO who have achieved competence in chest drain management or under the direct supervision of a competent staff member. See Appendix 6 Guidance for assessing competency in pleural procedures for advanced trainees and specialist nurses.
