What is eRIC?
eHealth NSW's Electronic Record for Intensive Care (eRIC) is a statewide Clinical Information System (CIS) for Intensive Care Units (ICUs). Replacing paper forms, eRIC electronically integrates ICU patient data from multiple devices to provide enhanced clinical decision-making. eRIC incorporates best-practice protocols, automates monitoring and reporting, and configures this information in a simple, electronic format to assist clinicians in making informed medical decisions.
Co-designed by ICU clinicians, eRIC is the first statewide ICU CIS in Australia and, once fully deployed in NSW, it will be one of the largest in the world. To deliver better outcomes for our patients, eRIC is updated quarterly based on clinician feedback to ensure the system stays relevant in the every evolving world of ICU healthcare.
Why is it necessary?
In NSW, there is no standard CIS for adult ICUs and clinical ICU staff. Prior to eRIC, only six of the forty-one NSW adult ICUs utilised a localised CIS, the others relying on paper.
A statewide ICU CIS ensures a standard practice across all adult ICUs. It also provides a strong base for reporting, benchmarking, and research.
Issues that plagued paper systems include illegible handwriting, patient confidentiality, misplaced notes, accessibility of patient information and transcription errors. These concerns are resolved with eRIC.
The integration with critical care equipment allows eRIC to capture patient data minute-by-minute, providing clinicians a level of accuracy and accountability not previously seen with paper-based charting.
eRIC integrates with:
- Non-invasive and invasive ventilators
- Patient haemodynamic monitors
- Renal replacement therapy machines
- Patient Administration Systems
- Pathology and medical imaging
eRIC was built through extensive clinical engagement. Over 160 ICU and non-ICU clinicians were engaged, across 55 ICUs. This collaborative approach ensured eRIC met the unique clinical safety requirements required to care for ICU patients.

- On-site program support post go-live, in-house technical support and 24 hour telephone help desk through State Wide Service Desk
- Customised training to suit various roles, classroom and video training as well as e-learning modules
